Were you born to BBQ?
|
Nothing screams summertime like DJ Jazzy Jeff and the tantalizing aroma of fire-licked BBQ. Whether it's a hunk o' meat or piping hot stalks of asparagus ripe for the gnawing, yelpers will tell you the shops that've got the goods and the spots that grill it proper.
Looking for finger lickin' good? Wendy K heads over to Memphis Minnie's for "some fine-ass rib-nibblin' authentic barbecue," trickling down from owner Bob Kantor, a born-again 'cue fanatic. Alfonse P of Louisiana has had some epic Southern BBQ in his time, and Johnson's Barbeque comes pretty darn close to the real thing, with "ribs that fall off the bone" and a brisket that's "tender, lean and melts in the mouth." Ironwood is the big daddy of BBQ for Christina S, with perfectly smoked cowboy beans and famous sweet and spicy Anchor Steam barbecue sauce.
The "raw animal instinct" in Michael M comes out in full force for the grilled meaty goodness at The Brick Pig's House in Oakland, not to mention their homemade potato salad and blackberry cobbler. Yelp epicureans like Allison M follow their noses to the weekly Wednesday pig roast at Ducca, where the beers are flowing and things get downright succulent and juicy, in more ways than one. Craving the flavors of the East? Kim D does it DIY-style at Brothers Korean BBQ, where she gets her meat "sizzling and snapping seductively over white hot glowing embers," only to be pulled out and consumed immediately with fresh banchan.
Looking to fire up your own grill? Megan W gets her beef from the tasty young men at Prather Ranch, "slinging their locally farmed free-range handsome meats around a giant fiery grill" at the Ferry Building. Sabrina L goes to Polarica for "any exotic meat that's legal to sell," and yelpers back her up with some bizarro grilling suggestions. The true hardcore, like Veronica G, make the trek all the way to Mountain View to Dittmer's authentic old world butcher shop. But Priscilla L knows you don't need to leave San Francisco for authenticity -- Guerra's is a true family-run joint where the meat knowledge is a cut above prime.
